CALCARVER MARCH 2025

Triple ‘C’ Carving Club President pays us a visit!

All the way from Sarnia Ontario, President Pat More, here in town for just a short time, paid us a very welcome visit. Not only did she tell us about her own carving club and spend the evening carving with us, she came bearing gifts. Pat donated her own father’s wood from the wood shop he is no longer using to us. She also brought a wonderful set of chisels scooped up by Darien to start his own tool collection. She also brought us a Triple C Carving challenge complete with blanks. The challenge was happily accepted and we will be able to show her the results when she visits again next week. We have a high bar to meet as the Sarnia carvers did a fine job of this challenge themselves. See their website at www.tripleccarvers.ca

Featured Carvings and Meet the Members

Wendy A, one of our club’s outstanding woodburners, has created this wee beauty before our very eyes.

A warm welcome to Grace who comes to us from the Triple C Carving Club in Sarnia. She brings a great mix of experience and enthusiasm.

A warm welcome to another special new member, Peyton W. is none other than Dale C’s granddaughter.  Wood is in her blood and she is sure to be a brilliant carver under Dale’s watchful eye.

Phil J. continues to impress with carving and burning befitting the best of what we as a club set out to achieve. You do us proud, Phil.

PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE 2025: Let’s face it, when you’ve been carving for any time at all, you’ve got unfinished projects. This may be just the motivation we all need to get those all but forgotten projects back out and turned into the masterpieces we all thought they would be when we started them.

President’s Message

Jerry is taking a well earned break from delivering a message this time around but he is hosting our first ever Dog and Log event. This is a simple event where we will attend a regular meeting with an important discussion and vote on whether we restrict the number of members in the club or not but we will be treated with free hotdogs from 6:30 to 7:30 first. Come hungry and ready to carve.

JERRY MURPHY

Keep carving and keep your fingers out of the way

Something of Interest: Michael Robillard

Article suggestion coming from Andre B.

French cabinetmaker, Michel Robillard has crafted a full size replica Citroen “2CV”. The equally beautiful and functional vehicle is built using a mix of lumbers including apple, pear, walnut and cherry. No quick carve, this project took 5,000 hours over 5 years to complete. It can reach speeds up to 80 KPH. With amazing attention to detail, even the dashboard, steering wheel, and gear selector are all fully wooden.

The hood alone, for example, has been carved out of a single block of wood and has the required 22 ridges, all created using a chisel and then innumerable hours of sanding. The seats, rather than having upholstery are constructed with wooden slats.

Of course, in order for the car to be fully drivable, Robillard didn’t make the metal components – the engine, wheels and headlights. They are the only things the he didn’t make. Even the hubcaps are fully wooden. To protect the car from the heat of the engine, he has used insulation under the hood. And believe it or not, it is only one of two cars he has now made.

What’s a carve like this worth, you ask? Collector Jean-Paul Favand, bought it for a cool €210,000 (CDN$351,984), with plans to show it in his museum.

This is not the only car made entirely of wood either. Marie-Laure and Arnaud Gabriel, in Normandy, France, have a museum of life-size wooden vehicles if you would like to buy one rather than carve it yourself. The vehicles were made by a local carpenter who for the past 40 years has devoted all of his spare time to making full-size models of various vehicles; motorcycles, Jeeps, tractors, race cars, a locomotive, and the Apollo lunar rover, and before selling our new favourite, they had both of Robillard’s two iconic Citroëns.

Believe it or not, there are others too!

Truong Van Dao, a 30 year old father in Viet Nam, made his son a fully drivable scale model Bugatti.

There are more!

Name that tool:  Combination Gauge for both marking lines parallel to an edge and laying out mortice & tenons. The brass slide is set into the stem in a tee slot. The stock is inlaid with brass wear strips and a solid brass insert provides the thread for the knurled brass locking screw. All wooden parts are lacquered rosewood.
